Centrals Juniors Youth Girls U17.5 joined AFL Cairns Juniors
Centrals Women’s AFL Club saw an opportunity to form a Youth Girls team to act as a feeder club for the Women’s League. Standing women’s coach, Bev Crimmins (Speedy) sought the help of three under 16 girls, who had a strong interest in AFL and trained with the women, to find enough girls to make a Youth Girls Team.
Speedy took the reins as coach and with only 13 girls, we joined the Youth Girls League in 2016.
We started strong and went through the season undefeated, making it through the Semi-Final & Preliminary Final to make the Grand Final.
Unfortunately the pressure got to us and we lost the 2016 Grand Final to Cairns City Lions.
That wasn’t going to stop us! With an amazing 35+ girls registering in 2017 we were toying with the idea of forming 2 teams, until the U14’s Youth Girls was born.
With the new younger girls given the opportunity to play in a controlled setting more and more girls joined the two grades.
2017
In 2017 saw our U17’s only dropping one game in the home and away season, and both U14’s and U17.5’s making the Grand Final. It also saw Centrals Youth Girls U14 and U17.5’s both take out the Premierships.
2018 has been bigger than ever, with over 50 registrations across both grades, including girls from all over the Cape, Kuranda, Julatten and Mossman.
We requested to be involved in Indigenous Round and took that to the greater community in top style. We continue to kick goals and improve the quality of Youth Girls footy in Cairns. With our girls progressing to NQ representative footy, QLD Schools Cup, Gold Coast Suns Academy and as far as QLD rep, Centrals girls are making names for themselves across the country.
Keep an eye out for many of these girls making their way into AFLW in the very near future.
As with any footy team, we can’t do what we do every week without the help of our coaches, team managers, volunteers, parents and of course a strong Junior Club!
